George Bernard Shaw was an Irish born British playwright, critic, man of letters, socialist pamphleteer and lecturer, and is said to be one of the most influential figures in modern literature. He is also the co founder of the London School of Economics.
Shaw was almost forty before he began to taste success from his writings and he continued to write until his death when he was ninety four years old. His works won him the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature in 1925, and an Academy Award in 1938. It is remarkable that he turned down all other awards, including the offer of a knighthood.
A lot of his plays and sayings dealt with social problems and problems of individual growth, using comedies to bring laughter as a means to clarity of thought, strength of purpose and healthier feeling.
